Route 9 AMA: Cupey Station – Old San Juan

Route 9 runs along San Juan’s south-north axis, from Cupey Station to the San Juan Covadonga Terminal, passing through Río Piedras and Sagrado Corazón Station. With a bus every 20 minutes on weekdays, it is one of the network’s highest-frequency routes.

Route and stops

Route 9 crosses San Juan from south to north, linking two Urban Train stations and ending at the gates of the old town. This is ATI’s official route in the Cupey → San Juan direction:

Schedule and frequency

Route 9 runs Monday to Saturday and public holidays. These are ATI’s official times:

Frequency: every 20 minutes Monday to Friday, every 35 minutes on Saturdays and between 30 and 40 minutes on public holidays.

⚠️ Route 9 does not run on Sundays. If you are heading to Old San Juan on a Sunday, the alternative is route 3, which does run every day until 11:00 p.m. from Sagrado Corazón Station.

AMA schedules can change and are not always kept exactly. Check the real arrival time in the official Transit app before leaving.

Right now travel is free because fare collection is suspended. When ATI restores fares, the price of Route 9 will be:

Payment will be made when boarding, with exact change or with the travel card sold at Urban Train stations. The card allows free transfers between train and bus within a 2-hour window.

Urban Train connection

Route 9 is one of the few that links with the train at two separate points along its route:

  • 🚆Cupey StationRoutes 7, 15, 17, 18, 31 and Metro Urbano route 30 also stop there
  • 🚆Sagrado CorazónThe station with the most bus connections in the whole network

That makes it useful two ways: to reach Old San Juan from the southern metropolitan area without changing buses, and to connect with the train at either end. Cupey also has free parking with 297 spaces.

Nothing. Fare collection on AMA buses and the Urban Train has been suspended since March 2024, so riding Route 9 is free. When collection resumes, the general fare will be $0.75.
