💡 Tips for Your Visit

🎫 Travel card

You do not need a card right now: the service is free of charge. Once fare collection resumes, the travel card will allow free transfers between the train and AMA buses for two hours.

👟 Comfortable footwear

Old San Juan has cobblestone streets and hills. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Public transport drops you at the entrance, but exploring means walking.

☀️ Best time to go

Visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00 AM) to avoid the heat and the crowds. Buses are busier at weekends.

🎒 Luggage

If you are carrying suitcases, consider leaving them at your hotel. The streets of Old San Juan are not ideal for dragging large luggage.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the full trip from the Urban Train to Old San Juan cost?

Nothing right now: fare collection has been suspended since March 2024, so both the train and the bus are free of charge. When it resumes, the train will cost $1.50 and the bus $0.75, but with the travel card the transfer between the two within the following two hours is included, so you would pay only $1.50.

No. The Urban Train does not reach Old San Juan directly. The closest station is Sagrado Corazón, where you need to take an AMA bus (route 3) for an additional 15 minutes.

How long does the whole journey take?

It depends on where you start. From Bayamón, the western terminus: about 30 min by train to Sagrado Corazón plus 15 min by bus, so around 45 minutes. From Hato Rey: ~10 min by train plus 15 by bus, around 25-30 minutes.

Do buses run at night?

Most AMA buses finish around 9:00 PM, but route 3 is an exception: it runs until 11:00 PM every day, including Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The Urban Train runs until 11:30 PM.
