How to Get to Old San Juan from the Urban Train

Old San Juan is the historic heart of Puerto Rico, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Although the Urban Train does not reach the old town directly, from Sagrado Corazón Station you can easily connect via AMA buses. We explain all available options.

Get off at Sagrado Corazón Station

This is the station closest to Old San Juan. When exiting, look for signs towards the "Bus Terminal" or ask for route 3 stop. The stop is located on Avenida Ponce de León, in front of the station.

Wait for the bus with sign "3 - San Juan" or "Covadonga". The trip lasts approximately 15 minutes. The bus travels along Avenida Ponce de León and then takes the exclusive train lane to Covadonga Terminal.

If you are going to use both the Urban Train and AMA buses, buy the NFC card. It allows free transfers between both systems for 2 hours.

👟 Comfortable Footwear

Old San Juan has cobblestone streets and hills. Use comfortable walking shoes. Public transport drops you at the entrance, but exploring requires walking.

☀️ Best Schedule

Visit early in the morning (8:00-10:00 AM) to avoid heat and crowds. There is more bus traffic on weekends.

🎒 Luggage

If you carry suitcases, consider leaving them at your hotel. The streets of Old San Juan are not ideal for dragging large suitcases.

No. The Urban Train does not reach Old San Juan directly. The nearest station is Sagrado Corazón, from where you must take an AMA bus (route 3) that will take you an additional 15 minutes.

How long does the whole journey take?

It depends on your origin point. From Bayamón: ~45 min (train) + 15 min (bus) = ~1 hour. From Hato Rey: ~10 min (train) + 15 min (bus) = ~25-30 minutes.

Is there bus service during the night?

AMA buses operate until 9:00-11:00 PM depending on the route. The Urban Train operates until 11:30 PM. If you leave late, check the specific schedules for route 3.
