How to Get to Plaza Las Américas from the Urban Train

Plaza Las Américas is the largest shopping mall in the Caribbean, with over 300 stores, restaurants and entertainment. If you travel on the Puerto Rico Urban Train, getting there is very easy from Roosevelt or Hato Rey stations. We explain all available options.

📍 Location: Roosevelt Station is on Avenida Franklin Delano Roosevelt, next to the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. From there, Plaza Las Américas is just over a kilometre and a half along the same avenue, about a 20-minute walk. If that is too far, the bus option below drops you at the mall entrance.

Get off at Roosevelt Station

Take the train toward Sagrado Corazón and get off at Roosevelt Station, in the heart of the Hato Rey financial district and next to the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico.

Take the exit toward Avenida Roosevelt

On your way out of the station, look for the exit onto Avenida Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the road that leads directly to the mall.

About a 20-minute walk

Walk along Avenida Roosevelt heading west, towards number 525. It is just over a kilometre and a half along a main avenue, ending at the main entrance of Plaza Las Américas. If the walk feels long or the heat is heavy, get off at Hato Rey and take the bus instead.

ALTERNATIVE If you prefer not to walk

If you are coming from the Hato Rey area or prefer a route with less walking, get off at Hato Rey Station and take an AMA bus that will drop you off at the mall entrance.

🚌 AMA routes ending at Plaza Las Américas:

  • Route 21: San Juan → Sagrado Corazón → Plaza Las Américas (runs through Condado). Operates Monday to Saturday and holidays, every 30 minutes on weekdays.
  • Route 22: Sagrado Corazón → Plaza Las Américas, every 30 minutes. Weekdays only, from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Nothing right now: fare collection has been suspended since March 2024, so both the train and AMA buses are free of charge. When it resumes, the train will cost $1.50 and the bus $0.75, with a transfer between the two included for the following two hours.

Is there an Urban Train station inside Plaza Las Américas?

No. The closest station is Roosevelt, just over a kilometre and a half away, about a 20-minute walk along Avenida Roosevelt. If you would rather not walk, get off at Hato Rey and take route 21 (Monday to Saturday and holidays) or route 22 (weekdays only), which both end at the mall itself.

Are there buses to Plaza Las Américas at the weekend?

On Saturdays and holidays, yes, with route 21. On Sundays, no: route 21 does not run that day and route 22 operates on weekdays only, so no AMA bus reaches the mall on a Sunday. That day you will need to get off at Roosevelt station and walk about 20 minutes, or take a taxi or ride-hailing service from Hato Rey.

Is it safe to walk from Roosevelt Station?

Avenida Roosevelt is a main road with good lighting and constant traffic, in the heart of the Hato Rey financial district. Even so, it is around 20 minutes in the open air: in the heat, after dark or loaded with bags, the bus from Hato Rey is the better call. As in any urban area, take basic precautions.

Can I bring shopping bags on the Urban Train?

Yes. The Urban Train allows shopping bags and backpacks. Just avoid blocking aisles or doors during the trip.

How much time should I plan for the round trip?

From the Hato Rey area, including the bus, around an hour round trip. From Bayamón, about two hours. Note that the train runs until 11:30 PM, but Plaza closes at 9:00 PM Monday to Saturday and 7:00 PM on Sundays.
