Route 40 AMA: Piñero Station – Airport (SJU)
Route 40 is the AMA express bus connecting Piñero Station on the Urban Train with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), stopping at The Mall of San Juan and crossing the Teodoro Moscoso Bridge. It is the route ATI itself recommends for linking the airport with the Urban Train.
Route and stops
Route 40 is an express service: it makes very few stops so it can link Piñero Station with the airport quickly. This is ATI’s official route in the Piñero → Airport direction:
- Piñero Station — Urban Train connection
- Jesús T. Piñero Expressway
- The Mall of San Juan
- Teodoro Moscoso Bridge
- Luis Muñoz Marín Airport (SJU)
In the opposite direction, from the Airport to Piñero, the route runs in reverse: airport, Teodoro Moscoso Bridge, Mall of San Juan, Jesús T. Piñero Expressway and Piñero Station.
Route based on ATI’s official itinerary. Check the official route map or the Transit app for real-time detail.
Schedule and frequency
Route 40 runs every day of the year, including Sundays and holidays. It is one of only three AMA routes with Sunday service. These are ATI’s official times:
| Direction | Days | First trip | Last trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Piñero → Airport | Monday to Friday | 5:00 a.m. | 8:00 p.m. |
| Piñero → Airport | Sat, Sun and holidays | 6:00 a.m. | 8:00 p.m. |
| Airport → Piñero | Monday to Friday | 5:20 a.m. | 8:20 p.m. |
| Airport → Piñero | Sat, Sun and holidays | 6:20 a.m. | 8:20 p.m. |
Frequency: every 60 minutes, Monday through Sunday and holidays. Since this is an express route with one bus per hour, plan your trip with plenty of margin, especially if you are catching a flight.
AMA schedules can change and are not always kept exactly. Always check the real arrival time in the official Transit app before leaving.
Fare
Right now travel is free because fare collection is suspended. When ATI restores fares, the price of Route 40 will be:
Payment will be made when boarding, with exact change or with the travel card sold at Urban Train stations. The card allows free transfers between train and bus within a 2-hour window.
Urban Train connection
Route 40 starts at Piñero Station, one of the Urban Train stops in the Hato Rey / Río Piedras area. That makes it the most direct way to combine airport and train:
- 🚆Connection at PiñeroGet off the train and take Route 40 to the airport
- 🎫Free transferTrain ⇄ bus within 2 hours with the travel card
Routes 4, 8, 17, 26 and 41 also stop at Piñero Station, so it is a good connection point if you are coming from Cataño, Martínez Nadal, Cupey, Trujillo Alto or Iturregui.
Route 40 at the airport
At SJU airport, the bus stops are marked on the kerb at the arrivals level, in front of the terminals. Look for the post with the route number. Since the service is express and runs hourly, check the schedule before relying on this option to catch a flight.
If Route 40 does not fit your timing, Route 53 also reaches the airport from the San Juan Covadonga Terminal, and Route 5 passes the airport on its way between Iturregui and San Juan.
