Puerto Rico Urban Train Information

The Urban Train has a fleet of 74 rail cars. During peak hours trains run with four cars coupled together; during off-peak times, weekends and holidays they run with two.

Another thing worth knowing is that its stations do not have platform screen doors, so take care when walking along the platform.

As for accessibility, it has elevators and adapted access points for people with disabilities, making the system easier to use for those with reduced mobility.

Looking ahead: in July 2026 the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $10 million to study a possible extension of the train toward Old San Juan and the airport. It’s a study, not construction — there’s no build date yet. You can follow the process on the official portal tuextension.pr.gov.

Data and Technical Characteristics

In this section, we have included some data and technical characteristics about the Urban Train:

History of the San Juan Urban Train

The history of this means of transportation dates back to 1967, when the first proposals for its construction in the city of San Juan were made. However, it was not until 1989 when the first official proposal was made.

Although in 1993 the financing of this new railway system was approved by the United States Federal Transit Administration, construction did not begin until the late 90s.

The development of the project suffered various delays due to the lack of cooperation between the parties involved in the project. After the completion of the works, the inauguration took place on December 17, 2004.

For a year and a half after the inauguration, specifically until June 2005, the use of this railway system was free of charge in order to promote its use.

Other Transportation in Puerto Rico

In addition to the Urban Train, another reliable option for getting around the San Juan metropolitan area are the buses of the Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA).

This public transportation service covers routes that connect different sectors and communities, including areas that the train does not reach, facilitating the daily mobility of thousands of residents and visitors.

If you need to combine both systems to reach your destination, the AMA buses are a practical and economical alternative.
