Route 5 AMA: Iturregui – Airport – Old San Juan
Route 5 runs along the coast from Iturregui to the San Juan Covadonga Terminal, calling at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport, Isla Verde and Calle Loíza. With a bus every 20 minutes on weekdays, it is the most frequent of the routes serving the airport.
Route and stops
Route 5 follows the metropolitan area’s coastal axis, linking Carolina with Old San Juan. This is ATI’s official route in the Iturregui → San Juan direction:
- Iturregui
- Marginal Baldorioty
- Urb. Los Ángeles
- Luis Muñoz Marín Airport
- Ave. Isla Verde
- Calle Loíza
- Ave. De Diego
- Ave. Ponce de León
- Train exclusive lane
- San Juan (Covadonga Terminal)
In the opposite direction, from San Juan to Iturregui, the route runs in reverse, also calling at the airport.
Route based on ATI’s official itinerary. Check the official route map or the Transit app for real-time detail.
Schedule and frequency
Route 5 runs Monday to Saturday and public holidays, with practically identical times in both directions:
| Days | First trip | Last trip | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 5:05 a.m. | 9:00-9:08 p.m. | every 20 min |
| Saturdays | 5:30 a.m. | 8:00 p.m. | every 40 min |
| Holidays | 5:30 a.m. | 8:00 p.m. | every 40 min |
With a bus every 20 minutes on weekdays, Route 5 runs three times more often than route 40 (the airport express, which comes every 60 minutes), although the journey is longer because it makes many more stops.
AMA schedules can change and are not always kept exactly. Check the real arrival time in the official Transit app before leaving.
Fare
Right now travel is free because fare collection is suspended. When ATI restores fares, the price of Route 5 will be:
Payment will be made when boarding, with exact change or with the travel card sold at Urban Train stations. The card allows free transfers between train and bus within a 2-hour window.
Urban Train connection
Route 5 does not call at any Urban Train station. To combine it with the train you need to change buses:
- 🔄Change at San JuanAt Covadonga Terminal you can take route 3 to Sagrado Corazón Station
- 🚆Direct alternativeRoute 40 does link the airport with Piñero Station without changing
If your final destination is the Urban Train, route 40 is usually the better option despite its lower frequency, because it reaches a station directly. Route 5 is preferable if you are heading to Old San Juan, Isla Verde or the Calle Loíza area.
Route 5 at the airport
Route 5 calls at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in both directions. The bus stops are marked on the kerb at the arrivals level, in front of the terminals.
It is the most frequent of the three routes serving the airport: route 5 comes every 20 minutes, route 53 every 67 and route 40 every 60. That said, none of the three runs on Sundays except route 40.
