ROUTE 30 · METRO URBANO

Route 30 AMA Metro Urbano: Cupey Station – Caguas

Route 30 is a Metro Urbano express linking Cupey Station on the Tren Urbano with Caguas along the PR-52 motorway, calling at Las Catalinas Mall. It is the only bus in the network connecting the metropolitan area with Caguas.

Route and stops

Route 30 leaves the station and joins the motorway southbound, with no intermediate neighbourhood stops. This is the official ATI itinerary in the Cupey → Caguas direction:

  • Cupey Station — Tren Urbano connection
  • Autopista Luis A. Ferré (PR-52)
  • Las Catalinas Mall
  • Caguas Público Car Terminal

The return trip follows the same itinerary in reverse.

Itinerary as published by ATI. Check the official route map or the Transit app for real-time detail.

Schedule and frequency

Route 30 runs Monday to Sunday, public holidays included. These are the official ATI times:

Direction Days First trip Last trip
Cupey → Caguas Every day 6:15 a.m. 7:10 p.m.
Caguas → Cupey Every day 6:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m.

Frequency: every 30 minutes, with no variation by type of day.

⚠️ The service finishes early. The last trip leaves Caguas at 7:00 p.m. and Cupey at 7:10 p.m., every day. If you are coming back from Caguas in the afternoon, do not count on a late return: the train runs until 11:30 p.m., but this bus does not.

AMA schedules may change and are not always met exactly. Check the actual arrival time in the official Transit app before you set off.

Fare

Right now travel is free because fare collection is suspended. When ATI reinstates fares, Route 30 will carry the Metro Urbano price, higher than that of an ordinary bus:

General fare
$2.00
Student
$1.00
Half fare
$1.00
Children aged 0-2
Free

Tarjeta Dorada holders travel free. Payment will be made on boarding, with exact change or with the travel card sold at Tren Urbano stations.

⚠️ Mind the price: $2.00 against the $0.75 of a conventional AMA route. Only Route 30 and Route 20 carry this fare, being the network’s two intercity motorway express services.

Tren Urbano connection

Route 30 starts at Cupey Station, its only point of contact with the train. Caguas lies outside the area served by the Tren Urbano:

  • 🚆Cupey StationRoutes 7, 9, 15, 17, 18 and 31 also stop there
  • 🅿️Park & Ride at CupeyFree, guarded parking with 297 spaces

From Cupey the train reaches Sagrado Corazón in about 14 minutes and Bayamón in about 20, so the bus-plus-train combination covers much of the metropolitan area from Caguas.

Getting to Caguas on a Sunday

This is what sets Route 30 apart: it is one of only three routes in the entire AMA network that runs on Sundays. The other two are Route 3 and Route 40, both within San Juan.

In practice that means that on a Sunday or public holiday, Route 30 is the only way to reach Caguas by public transport from the metropolitan area, and the only way back. Every other AMA route rests.

It is worth comparing it with its fare sibling, Route 20 to Toa Baja, which is exactly the opposite: weekdays only.

Route 30 (Caguas) Route 20 (Toa Baja)
Days Every day, Sundays included Weekdays only
Frequency 30 min, constant 15 min at peak
Station Cupey Bayamón
Fare $2.00 $2.00

Put another way: Route 20 is built for commuting and Route 30 also works for getting around at the weekend. If your destination is Las Catalinas Mall, Route 30 stops there before reaching the Caguas terminal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Route 30 cost right now?
Nothing. Fare collection on AMA buses and the Tren Urbano has been suspended since March 2024, so riding Route 30 is free. When collection resumes, the general fare will be $2.00 because it is a Metro Urbano service.
Does Route 30 run on Sundays?
Yes. It is one of only three AMA routes with Sunday service, along with Route 3 and Route 40. It runs Monday to Sunday and on public holidays too, always every 30 minutes.
How often does Route 30 run?
Every 30 minutes, the same on every type of day. The first trip from Cupey leaves at 6:15 a.m. and the last at 7:10 p.m.; from Caguas, between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
How do I get to Caguas from San Juan by public transport?
Take the Tren Urbano to Cupey Station and change there to Route 30, which runs along the PR-52 motorway to the Caguas Público Car Terminal. It is the only AMA link to Caguas.
Why does Route 30 cost $2.00 and not $0.75?
Because it is a Metro Urbano route, the express motorway tier linking metropolitan municipalities with the train. Only Route 30 and Route 20 carry this fare; all other AMA routes cost $0.75.
